Movies for your mood tonight
Your taste stays the same. Your mood doesn’t. So Lights Down asks about tonight, every night.
Taste is who you are. Mood is tonight.
Fifteen swipes in the “what movie should I watch?” quiz find your Cinematic Archetype™, the taste that stays with you. Your mood changes from night to night, so Lights Down asks about it every time: "What are you up for tonight?" It takes a few seconds, and your taste stays underneath. Mood is one of several things the movie recommendation app learns from.
Pick everything you’re open to
The mood tiles don’t ask how you feel. They ask what you’re open to tonight. Think of them as genre cards, named for moods.
There are seven: Light & Fun, Romantic & Emotional, Smart & Engaging, Cinematic & Intense, Discovery & Adventure, Cozy & Comfortable, and Scary & Suspenseful. An eighth, Ask Ray, is for when you’d rather type it.
- Pick as many as you like. A film needs to fit only one of them to make your list.
- The more of your moods a film fits, the higher it ranks. Your taste orders the rest.
- Every pick says why. Each one names the mood it answers.
On a low night
There is no "sad" tile. That’s on purpose: you know better than an app what a rough night needs. Some nights that’s Cozy & Comfortable. Some nights it’s Romantic & Emotional and a good cry.
Or just say it. Tap Ask Ray and describe what you want in your own words: a feeling, a title, an actor, "a Korean thriller." It searches the whole Lights Down catalog, more than 18,000 films and 8,000 series, and comes back with five. It needs a free account, and three searches a month are free.
Not sure what you’re in the mood for?
Skip it. "Skip for tonight" ranks your picks on your taste alone. If they aren’t landing, open Filters and use "Bring to the top" to steer the list by how a film feels, what it’s about, its decade, or who’s in it. Have a long list saved instead? Here’s how to pick from a watchlist that got too big.
Two moods, one night
Watching with someone? Both of your moods count, and Lights Down looks for films that fit the two of you. When the moods pull apart, here’s what to do when you and your partner can’t agree on a movie. You can each write Ray a line too, and one search finds films for the two of you.
A few from the catalog

Questions people ask
How do I pick a movie that matches my mood?
Choose a mood first, then the movie. Tap every mood you’re open to, and Lights Down puts the films that fit the most of them first.
What should I watch when I’m feeling down?
Whatever you're open to. There's no "sad" button, so pick what feels right, or describe it in your own words with Ask Ray.
Can I pick more than one mood?
Yes, as many as you like. A film needs to fit only one to make the list.
What if I don’t know what I’m in the mood for?
Skip the mood. Your picks come from your taste alone, and Filters can steer them later.
