About Lights Down
We love movie night. The picking part, less so.
Why it exists
Choosing a film used to take us longer than watching one. Three apps open, the same twenty rows in each, and by the time anyone committed it was too late to start. Streaming solved having something to watch and quietly created a worse problem: too much of it, with nothing useful to sort by.
Lights Down is the fix we wanted for ourselves. Not another list of what is popular, and not a search box you have to already know the answer to use. Something that learns what you actually like, quickly, and then just tells you.
What it does
It is a free movie and TV picker. You swipe through fifteen posters, which takes about a minute, and it reads your taste from the pattern of what you kept and what you skipped. From there every recommendation is filtered through that profile and cross-checked against the streaming services you already pay for, so nothing it suggests is something you would have to go buy.
It works on your own. It also works with one other person watching, and that case is the one most tools get wrong: instead of one person picking and the other agreeing, you each take the quiz once and the picks that come back are the ones both profiles agree on.
Lights Down does not play films, does not merge your subscriptions into one login, and does not know the best film. It knows what you tend to like, points you at the service that has it, and gets out of the way.
The ten taste profiles
The quiz sorts you into one of ten patterns, the recognizable ways people actually choose. Some readers want the twist they cannot see coming; some want the film that looks extraordinary with the sound low; some want the one that will start an argument afterward in the good way. Each has its own page explaining what it means and the films at the center of it.
What it costs
Nothing. The quiz, the recommendations and the saved list are free, and they will stay free. There is no advertising and your taste data is not sold; the privacy policy is the binding version of that promise and the Do Not Sell or Share page covers the rest.
Ten percent of any proceeds Lights Down makes go to Jesus Film Project, which translates films into more than 2,000 languages. Stories should be available in a language people understand.
Who is behind it
Lights Down is built and run by a small independent team, not a studio and not a streaming service, which is why it can point at any service rather than steering you toward one. It is a consumer app rather than a publisher: everything here describes the product and how it picks, not news or professional advice.
